French nationality: do you need to pass the examen civique?

French nationality: do you need to pass the examen civique?

When applying for French nationality, the requirements depend on how you apply. Two common options are naturalization by decree and nationality through marriage. One key difference between the two is the examen civique.

Naturalization by decree

If you apply for naturalization by decree, you will need to show that you are well integrated into French society. This includes:

  • proving a B2 level of French (for applications filed from January 2026), and
  • passing the examen civique, which checks your knowledge of French values, institutions, and how the Republic works.

Passing the examen civique is a mandatory step in this process.

Nationality through marriage

If you apply for French nationality through marriage, the rules are a bit different.
You do not have to take the examen civique.

However, since January 2026, applicants must still demonstrate a B2 level of French, just like in naturalization cases.

The administration will also look at the genuine nature of the marriage, how long you have been married, and your overall integration in France.

Bottom line

  • Naturalization by decree
    → French level B2
     Examen civique required
  • Nationality through marriage
    → French level B2
     No examen civique

Knowing which rules apply to your situation helps avoid surprises and makes the process much smoother.
